Burke senior Raven Saunders announced Monday she will attend Southern Illinois on a track and field scholarship.
Saunders, one of the nation's top high school athletes in the shot put, broke the national indoor record on Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Nationals held at New York City Armory. She had a throw of 56 feet, 71/2 inches at the three-day event that features more than 4,000 high school athletes.
Saunders, a three-time state champion, was heavily recruited by colleges across the country. She had narrowed her choices to Arizona State, LSU, UCLA and Southern Illinois before her announcement on Monday.
Saunders' record toss shattered the mark held by Michelle Carter of Red Oak, Tex. Carter set the record of 54-91/2 in 2003. She went on to compete in the 2008 Olympics and is the American women's record holder at 66-43/4.
