Lacy Schools of Cosmetology closed its three schools across South Carolina, including one in Goose Creek, earlier this week, according to state regulators.
Efforts to reach the schools by phone and email to learn why they closed were unsuccessful.
The schools had 72 students as of January, according to the state Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation. Twenty-seven of those were in Goose Creek. Others were in Aiken and Lexington.
A fourth school operated at Citadel Mall, but it closed last fall because of unpaid rent payments, according to Spinoso Real Estate, the mall manager.
"The (S.C. Cosmetology) Board is aware the school has closed and is looking into it," said Leisa Kudelka, LLR spokeswoman.
Students can enroll in other schools, but they will need their transcripts, Kudelka said.
"We are currently looking into ... what recourse the students may have," she said.
