Handicapping the field

Team (seed) Odds Comment

3. Duke 5-2 Best player, supporting cast in the league.

1. Virginia 4-1 Stifling defense never takes a day off.

2. Syracuse 5-1 Baffling late home losses to BC, Ga Tech.

4. North Carolina 7-1 Marcus Paige always heats up in second half.

5. Pittsburgh 10-1 4-0 in overtime since the start of February.

9. Florida State 20-1 Need to beat Terps, Cavs to go dancing.

6. Clemson 25-1 Overachievers playing best ball right now.

8. Maryland 25-1 Final sendoff before departure for Big Ten.

10. Miami 35-1 Not a bad showing for young Hurricanes.

7. NC State 50-1 T.J. Warren rolls out of bed and scores 20.

11. Georgia Tech 75-1 Lost to Clemson twice, by 4 and 8 points.

12. Wake Forest 75-1 Knocked off Duke, UNC two months apart.

13. Notre Dame 75-1 Dreadful maiden voyage in new league.

15. Virginia Tech 100-1 At least its bubble can't painfully burst.

Best of the ACC

Best first-round game: No. 12 Wake Forest vs. No. 13 Notre Dame. Pitt stole the fifth seed from Clemson, but probably ended up with a worse Thursday matchup.

Best defender: K.J. McDaniels. Led the voting for media and coaches all-league defensive squads; blocks (2.8), rebounds (7.2) and guards opponents' best player.

Best clutch shooter: Marcus Paige, UNC. Tied for second in the league with 75 3-pointers; in 12 games, he scored four or fewer first-half points but double-digit second-half points.

Best clutch rebounder: Jabari Parker, Duke. Much as the freshman phenom is asked to do, he shines glass when the Blue Devils need a stop.

Best dunker: K.J. McDaniels, Clemson. He just makes it look so effortless, even though the kid's still learning what he's capable of doing.

Best sixth man: Ian Miller, Florida State. 13.3 points, 3.0 assists, 0.9 assists and 88 percent on free throws certainly gets the job done off the bench.

All-underrated: Talib Zanna, Pittsburgh. All the love goes to Lamar Patterson (deservedly), but Zanna's a fierce rebounder with a point guard's passing touch.

Most versatile: K.J. McDaniels, Clemson. Yeah, him again. Name another D-1 player leading his team in points, boards, threes, blocks and steals. Hint: you can't.
