More car classes at Trident Tech?
The Spring Spin-Off Car Show will take place for the 22nd time April 26 at Trident Technical College's main campus.
Its popularity is measured a number of ways, including the volume of car classes that auto buffs can enter. The show sponsors 20 categories, and organizers hand out trophies to the top three models per class.
All the same, show backers are getting word out that this might be a good time to form an additional class or classes.
Organizers have started the ball, er, wheel rolling in the official entry form. "Want to add a class?" it says. "Email (organizer) Buzz Varella at email@example.com."
According to Brad Davis, executive general manager of Rick Hendrick Imports and an organizer this year, the show would present an offer to interested parties.
If auto clubs team up and pre-register six or more cars in a "new" category, then Trident Tech would find a trophy sponsor and set up the class, he said. The pre-registration deadline is April 14.
For anyone who wants to know, the categories now are: 4 by 4, antique, Camaro and Firebird, Chevrolet, Corvair, Corvette, Ford/Lincoln Mercury, import, Model A, Mopar, Mustang years 1964 ½-'73, Mustang '74 and later, open, Porsche, race car, street performance, street rod, truck, Volkswagen/air-cooled and Volkswagen/Audi.
Meanwhile, the show doles out eight special trophies. They are Best of Show, Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Interior, People's Choice, President's (trophy), Advisory Board and Club Affiliation.
The Spring Spin-Off show will be held as usual on a Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college's 7000 Rivers Ave. campus.
Proceeds benefit the Athell Yon Scholarship for automotive studies. For more information, visit www.tridenttech.edu/3971_car_show.htm or call Varella at 843-574-6184 or Clint Snider at 843-574-6275. There's no rain date and alcohol is prohibited.
