A Walterboro man was jailed on charges that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.
Nathaniel Hampleton, 33, of Walterboro is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, according to an arrest warrant. He was being held on Sunday in the Charleston County jail on $100,000 bail.
Hampleton was arrested in Beaufort County on Friday with the assistance of sheriff's deputies and U.S. marshals, an incident report stated.
In a forensic interview conducted at the Lowcountry Children's Center last year, a 14-year-old girl told officials that she met Hampleton on Facebook. They chatted on the social networking site and through text messages, a detective stated in the warrant.
One day, the pair's relationship went beyond texting when Hampleton picked the girl up from Baptist Hill Middle-High School and sexually assaulted her, the warrant stated. Hampleton drove the girl to a Chinese restaurant after the assault and later dropped her off at school in time to ride the school bus home, officials said.
