Winslow was the last bomb-sniffing police dog working in South Carolina when he retired last year.
The black lab died Feb. 28, just a few weeks short of his 9th birthday, the Charleston Police Department announced Thursday.
"He provided protective services for many important people who visited Charleston, including presidents, vice presidents, members of presidents' families, federal judges and of course so many of those overnight call outs for evidence recovery," said Sgt. Brian J. Salkeld, who worked with Winslow for more than six years. "He was an amazing dog and most importantly he was a lovable goof ball."
Winslow was the last ATF K9 in South Carolina and was one of only about 500 working ATF dogs in the world, Salkeld said.
