Toledo, Ohio - Forward Peter Boyd scored a goal and an assist and goaltender Allen York made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season to lead the South Carolina Stingrays (35-17-2-3) over the Toledo Walleye (16-34-3-1), 2-0, Wednesday night at Huntington Center.
The Stingrays finished the season series against the Walleye with a 4-0-0-0 record with three of the four victories arriving by shutout.
Boyd broke open the scoring five minutes into the contest, catching a pass from forward Dale Mitchell at top of the right-wing circle and firing a shot over the blocker of Walleye netminder Jared Coreau. Forward Patrick Gaul recorded the second assist.
In the second frame, forward Wayne Simpson gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead with a shorthanded tally at 12:28, completing a 2-on-1 rush with Boyd rifling in a one-time pass from the bottom of the left-wing circle inside the post.
The Stingrays clamped down on defense in the third period, allowing seven Walleye shots. On the power play, the Stingrays finished the contest 0-for-2 while the Walleye went 0-for4.
The Stingrays wrap up the northern swing of a season-long six-game road trip in Kalamazoo, Mich., on March 7 to take on the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:30 p.m. at Wings Stadium. The road trip concludes March 14 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at The Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:05 p.m. in Duluth, Ga.
