He's listed as president on business cards, but Will Herring can assume a number of titles - owner, CEO, chairman - at Hunter Quinn Homes.

Herring launched the business, headquartered in Mount Pleasant, a year ago. It now has three full-time employees and a part-timer, and he's "looking to hire."

He's incorporated innovations learned in a dozen years buying land, overseeing construction and handling sales for national, regional and local home builders. He even developed the new company's title, which conjoins Hunter, his middle name; and Quinn, the middle names of wife Hillary and daughter Penelope, 2.

From his modest office on Church Street in Mount Pleasant, Herring explains how things have proceeded thus far. "Unbelievably busy, still in start-up mode," he says. "We opened the door in 2013."

The builder quietly kicked off construction last year in the existing Colony North neighborhood off Ashley Phosphate Road, filling in home sites that hadn't been built on.

Here's where Hunter Quinn Homes stands today:

- Continues progress on 11 lots it took over at Colony North. Thus far, the builder has framed four homes with three more under construction in the North Charleston community.

- Prepares 26 sites in The Park at Rivers Edge, a gated community off Dorchester Road. Plans call for single family homes.

- Gets ready to unveil a new community in Berkeley County later this year. The builder expects to start framing homes by early June in The Village at Fairmont South, located alongside the Spring Grove planned community off Cypress Gardens Road. The company intends to build 57 homes in the first construction phase and 107 all told. Prices start in the $100,000s.

Eventually, Hunter Quinn Homes looks to frame 217 houses at The Village at Fairmont South and at an adjacent, as-yet-unnamed neighborhood.

"We are looking forward to that area," Herring says. "There's a lot of action out there. It's a hot bed. We're excited going out there."

The company president says he's established Hunter Quinn Homes at an opportune period. He believes he's weathered the residential downturn that dug in a half-dozen years ago and only in the past year or two has shown consistent signs of reversing. "The market obviously went through a slow time in 2008-09." But opportunities have presented themselves since then, he says.

"We are a local group. We've got that going for us." The business can zero in on providing value and customer service, Herring says. In a separate vein, the company has been "focusing on some real energy-efficient stuff," he says.

While stationed in North Charleston and Berkeley County for the time being, the homebuilder intends to erect houses throughout greater Charleston, he says. Without going into specifics, Herring says the company hopes "to have a big announcement later this year." In the meantime, "We are looking every day" for future home-building prospects. "We've got our fingers on a couple of good positions."

For now, Hunter Quinn Homes will be inimately involved in The Village at Fairmont South. "That's our big project," he says. The builder teams with Carolina One Real Estate's new homes division to handle sales and marketing at Colony North and eventually The Park at Rivers Edge and The Village at Fairmont South.

Herring calls Carolina One New Homes "a great partner" with whom he relies on to promote home transactions. Jack Catterton, new home consultant, has an office in Hunter Quinn's East Cooper headquarters.

A native of Wilson, N.C., near Raleigh, Herring moved to the Charleston area in the late 1990s. He graduated from the College of Charleston, earned a master's of business administration from The Citadel and later added a construction degree from Trident Technical College.

Herring says he wants to grow Hunter Quinn Homes but not beyond the Lowcountry.

"We are trying to build homes for our neighbors," says Herring, who lives with his family in Mount Pleasant. "It's a great opportunity to serve the market."
