Colleton Prep capped a perfect season and captured the SCISA Girls Class A state championship with a 52-40 victory over James Island Christian on Saturday at the Sumter Civic Center.

The Lady Hawks finished with a 24-0 record. James Island Christian ended with a 16-10 mark.

"These girls started together in the seventh grade," Colleton Prep coach Barry Morehead said. "My main concern was that we hadn't been challenged in the regular season. The other night we struggled and went to overtime against (W.W.) King in the semifinal. We won and the girls realized they could come out on top when they were challenged."

James Island Christian made its sixth straight appearance in the title game. The team might find it a challenge next season since there are only eight girls on the roster and four are seniors.

"I hear that every year," James Island coach Bethany Smith said. "We are blessed with some great girls. We'll have to see who is coming up in the program, and we will have some players coming back."

Madeline Hill led the winners with 16 points. Laura Reynolds and Shelly McDonald tallied 10 apiece.

Mary Hamilton and Kayleigh Lacey both scored 13 for the Lions while Christian Costa added 10.

The Lions cut the lead to 32-24 at the end of three quarters, but couldn't get any closer.

"It wasn't our best effort," Smith said. "We had too many turnovers and we couldn't hit the free throws. But I am proud of the effort."
