A briefcase left Friday morning in a shopping cart outside a Summerville-area supermarket was never a threat to shoppers, deputies said.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office got a call about the suspicious find around 10:20 a.m. outside the Publix shopping center at 1585 Central Ave.
A bomb squad from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office came to help figure out whether the brown briefcase was a danger.
The doors to several of the businesses in the center were blocked.
But before 1 p.m., Dorchester County sheriff's Capt. Tony Phinney said, deputies discovered that the briefcase was empty and likely had been abandoned there in the shopping cart.
