ELGIN, S.C. -- Kershaw County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of an 18-year-old woman whose body was found on a dirt road near Elgin.
Sheriff Jim Matthews said Briana Rabon's death was "obviously a homicide."
Some children found the body on a dirt road near power lines Wednesday afternoon. Authorities have not said how Rabon died or when she was killed.
The sheriff said Rabon was last seen with a man Tuesday night who investigators are trying to find.
"There's no real indication that who she was with is responsible for this, but it is certainly somebody we want to talk to," Matthews said.
SLED investigators spent several hours collecting evidence from two crime scenes.
The woman's car was found several miles away at a restaurant at U.S. 601 and Interstate 20 after her mother reported her missing.
An autopsy was planned Thursday to determine the cause of death.
"At the present time we have some very strong leads that we are working and we have gathered considerable evidence," Matthews said. "Although one can ever say with certainty that we will solve this horrible crime quickly, I feel very confident that we are moving in the right direction."
