COLUMBIA, S.C. - An Oconee County man has been returned to South Carolina after his arrest in Tennessee.
The State newspaper reported that officials said Jason mark Carter escaped from a South Carolina Department of Mental Health facility Jan. 2. He was found the next day near Nashville, Tenn.
State Law Enforcement Division agents picked up Carter last week.
Carter was arraigned on grand larceny charge. Officials said he stole a state van when he escaped, bought a car and drove to Tennessee.
Officials said Carter was part of a patient work crew at the time of his escape.
Carter was being held by the Mental Health Department after the deaths of his mother and stepfather in Seneca in 2006. A judge found Carter not guilty by reason of insanity in 2009.
