A fire gutted a West Ashley laundromat and canceled a dance recital Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Ashley Hall Laundromat at 1636 Ashley Hall Road at 2:37 p.m., Charleston Fire Department Capt. Ryan Kunitzer said. Flames forced firefighters outside and burned a hole in the roof. Two ladder trucks fought the blaze from overhead. Authorities evacuated the entire center, including between 50 and 100 people who were having a recital in the Ballroom Dance Club a couple of doors down from the fire.

Crews from the city of Charleston, St. Andrews and North Charleston brought the blaze under control.

The laundromat appeared to be gutted. Crews were spraying water to cool it down several hours later. Water was spraying on the Klipper Kingz Barber Shop next door, but it was not immediately clear if the inside of the shop was damaged.

Police closed Ashley Hall Road between Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Orange Grove Road. The road was expected to remain closed for several hours.

Inspectors were on scene late Sunday afternoon trying to determine the cause of the fire. More information was expected Monday morning.
