Sales on sales means savings on savings
For a bargain hunter, few things are as exciting as a sale on top of a sale.
That seems to be the name of the game this week as Presidents Day sales linger on through the weekend. Many retailers are still shedding their winter collections, which means items that are already marked down are extra-cheap right now.
J.C. Penney is offering up to 25 percent off its already marked-down items online with the coupon code "FEBSAVE3." Deals range from winter coats to furniture, and many of them are priced lower than ever. Certain orders qualify for free shipping. The coupon code expires Sunday.
A few local retailers have added extra inventory to their sales racks. Monkee's of Daniel Island posted on Facebook Wednesday that it has women's apparel marked down up to 75 percent off. Some dresses are priced as low as $15, the boutique said.
StyleDwell on James Island has marked down their collection of Joe's Jeans, a designer denim line, by up to 50 percent off. The women's boutique is in the shopping center at Maybank Highway and Folly Road.
Sports Authority, for example, has slashed prices on running shoes for men and women until Saturday. Styles by Nike, ASICS and New Balance are priced as low as $39 at the North Charleston sports shop at 7800 Rivers Ave.
Sears also will offer many of its special Presidents Day markdowns until Saturday. Household appliances seem to be the focus of the sale, as the retailer has washer and dryer sets for as low as $999. Smaller appliances are marked down, too. Vacuums are as much as $170 cheaper, while some microwaves are marked down by as much as $50.
L.L. Bean's clearance sale has some robust discounts on items such as luggage, shoes and menswear. Prices are slashed by up to 70 percent off, and they've waived shipping fees.
The extra discounts billed as Presidents Day sales this week have more to do with inventory than honoring our country's forefathers. As winter starts to give way to spring, it's likely consumers will keep seeing mega-markdowns from many of the retail giants, both online and in stores.
