A two-story house on Sumter Street was seriously damaged by fire Thursday night.
The fire at 295 Sumter St., which is near Coming Street, was reported about 9:45 p.m. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 10 minutes, and everyone made it out safely, Charleston Fire Department Capt. Ryan Kunitzer said. Frefighters were battling heavy smoke coming from the second story of the wood-frame structure at 10:15 p.m. Some of the second-story windows were gone.
Police blocked off streets around King and Sumter. Emergency crews were still on scene at 10:20 p.m.
