Man, 75, stabbed by waiting attacker behind North Charleston store, police say

Police investigators believe a 75-year-old man was stabbed Wednesday morning during an ambush behind a North Charleston convenience store, they said.

The incident unfolded around 10:55 a.m. in the parking lot of the Jo Jo Quick Stop at 3312 Rivers Ave., which is near the Charleston Heights community.

North Charleston police officers responded and found the man with a stab wound in his abdomen, Deputy Chief Scott Deckard said.

Paramedics took him to Medical University Hospital, where Deckard said he underwent treatment.

The victim was not identified, and his condition wasn't immediately available. He managed to communicate with the officers despite his injury.

It appears that the assailant had waited for the man behind the store and stabbed him with a knife as he walked into the parking lot, Deckard said.

The man told detectives that he didn't know who had attacked him, Deckard said.

Witnesses saw the attacker running toward Reynolds Avenue, but police made no immediate arrests.

The witnesses described the suspect as a muscular black man who is 35 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and 210 pounds. His hair was worn in short dreadlocks pulled into a ponytail, and he was wearing khaki pants, a police statement added.
