What is it?

Soft drinks flavored with unusual ingredients.

What's the story?

In 17th-century France (1676), water, honey and lemon were combined creating the first "soft drink." It took until 1772 with Doctor Joseph Priestley's invention of carbonating water that the soda water industry was launched with the first "drinkable manmade glass of soda water." The industry took off in 1810 with the issue of the first U.S. patent for a means of mass manufacturing carbonated mineral water by the firm of Simons and Rundell of Charleston, S.C.

Who's buying it?

The novelty soft drink market resonates with teens, gag gifters and those exploring unusual soda flavors. California's Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop company is responsible for the largest inventory of unusual flavors; its creations have been bottled under the Lester's Fixins label since 2011

Who's selling it?

Look for Lester's Fixins at Sweet Charleston in the Great Hall Shops at the City Market. There, along with regional favorites such as Cheerwine and Blenheim Ginger ale are PBJ Soda, Bacon Soda and Buffalo Wing Soda. The company also makes Sweet Corn, Pumpkin Pie, Ranch Dressing, and Lemon Meringue Pie flavors. Southern Season in Mount Pleasant also carries Lester's Fixins. Prices range from $1.99-$2.99.

If your thirst for the fizzy stuff has gone flat, these are some flavors you may want to try.

Local Callie Dehorse enjoys the PBJ where she finds "the taste comes close to peanut butter and jelly."

How to drink it?

Well-chilled so that ice does not affect the "delicate" flavor profiles.
