Charleston Southern's Tory Schroff was named Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week for the opening weekend of the season, the conference office announced Monday.
Schroff, a senior from Mt. Laurel, N.J., struck out eight in six innings pitched during a 2-0 win over Villanova on Saturday.
The left-hander scattered just three hits in the contest and did not allow an extra-base hit. His strikeout total was just one shy of his career high of nine.
College of Charleston clinched the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 5 Region 3 Hunter Seat Championship with first- and second-place finishes at two IHSA shows hosted by Clemson in Pendleton this weekend.
On Saturday, the Cougars beat second-place Clemson in riding, 36-33. The team jumped out to an early lead behind High Point Rider of the day Eliza Hay's two wins in Open Flat (sec. B) and Open Fences (sec. B). Blaine Ferraro won Open Flat (sec. A), and Rachel Hyland won Novice Flat (sec. C) followed by Kristina Athey's win in Novice Flat (sec. D). Alyssa Johnson rounded out the day with a win in Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter.
On Sunday, the riding squad finished second to host Clemson, 36-34. Malka Fox-Epstein won Novice Fences (sec. B), Johnson won Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter and Julia Gorton won Walk-Trot (sec. B). The strong finish ensured the regional crown with just one show left, the Cougars' home show at Storybook Farm on March 1.
Charleston Southern's Ross Thomson eclipsed the school record for birdies in a career and is tied for seventh with teammate Jarrett Swan as the Bucs sit in second through two rounds at the Wexford Plantation Invitational on Hilton Head Island. The 17-team field played 36 holes on Monday and will wrap up the tournament on Tuesday at the Wexford Plantation Course.
