The person who was found dead in a vehicle that went off U.S. Highway 17 into Awendaw Creek Saturday has been identified.
She was Sandra Ann Weiss, 72, of New Bern, N.C., according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office. A cause of death has not been determined late Sunday pending an autopsy.
A vehicle went off U.S. 17 into the creek about 4:47 p.m Saturday. Divers found a body inside the vehicle under about 4 feet of water. The woman was traveling alone.
The highway was closed in both directions for several hours while inspectors made sure the bridge wasn't damaged.
Details of the wreck had been released as of Sunday night.
