Emergency shelters are opening in Berkeley, Dorchester and Colleton counties because of the icy cold expected tonight.
The Red Cross is opening warming shelters in Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
The Berkeley County shelters will open at 7 p.m. and remain open as long as needed.
Berkeley Middle School at 320 North Live Oak Drive, Moncks Corner, Cane Bay Middle School at Cane Bay Blvd., Summerville.
The Red Cross plans to open Summerville High School as an emergency shelter at 8 p.m.
Those coming to the shelters are asked to bring prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items, as well as diapers, formula and toys for children.
In the Walterboro area, Colleton County Middle School will be open as a warming shelter. Anybody needing a ride can call Emergency Preparedness at 549-5632.
Editor's note: The Red Cross announced but canceled plans to open St. George Middle School as a shelter and is opening Summerville High School later than announced earlier today.
