Charleston County has set March 4 for the first of what could be multiple public meetings to discuss plans and get feedback about a new airport road network.
The project, called the Airport Connector Road, will replace the four-lane International Boulevard from Interstate 526 to the airport. The replacement road would run from Montague Avenue at I-526, down a powerline easement behind the former Trailwood Mobile Home Park to Michaux Parkway, and on to the airport.
A statement from Charleston County says the goal of the new road "will be to provide increased connectivity for local commuters as well as citizens and visitors traveling directly to and from Charleston International Airport."
That might be one reason, but another factor is Boeing Co. The Chicago-based airplane manufacturer recently leased 468 additional acres across International Boulevard from its 787 Dreamliner campus at the airport for future expansion.
What will become of the existing section of International Boulevard in front of Boeing South Carolina is unclear, but it likely won't be accessible for airport-bound motorists or as a short cut to Dorchester Road via Michaux once the new road is built. It could become the primary artery in and out of work for the 6,600 employees at the Boeing site, but that decision hasn't been made.
Airport traffic would take the new road.
It's still early in the process, and the public will have a chance to question and comment on the proposed project.
