Ravenel Bridge closed after ice chunks hit vehicles

The Ravenel Bridge has been shut down after ice falling from its cables hit vehicles crossing the span this morning, the Mount Pleasant Police Department reported.

An occupant of a vehicle heading into Mount Pleasant was injured when falling ice broke the windshield and flung glass into the motorist's eyes, according to rescuers' radio communications.

The vehicle later stopped at a gas station along Coleman Boulevard, where emergency personnel responded before 10:30 a.m.

The police closed the bridge to vehicle and pedestrian traffic minutes later.

No further information on the injured person's condition was immediately known.
