It's hard to think about spring sports with this week's snow, ice and school closures, but Monday marks the start of practice for most teams.

They're always thinking about spring sports at SC Soccer, and the preseason rankings have been released for the top soccer teams in the Palmetto State.

The rankings include the usual suspects. In Class AAAA, the Wando boys and girls hold down the top spots. Academic Magnet and Bishop England vie for the top spots in Class AA for both the boys and girls.

The Bishop boys are No. 1, followed by Academic Magnet. In the girls poll, it's Academic Magnet No. 1 and the Bishops check in at No. 3.

In addition to the Wando boys, Fort Dorchester is No. 10 in Class AAAA. In Class AAA boys, Hilton Head is sixth, James Island 11th and Hanahan 13th.

In Class AAA girls, Hilton Head holds down the top spot.

SC Soccer also ranked the top SCISA teams. The Pinewood Prep boys are No. 2 in Class AAA and Porter-Gaud is third. The Porter-Gaud girls are also No. 3.

The prep soccer season begins with practices on Monday, and scrimmages get underway on Feb. 10. Preseason tournaments are scheduled for Feb. 28, and the regular season kicks off March 10.

Lacrosse hotbed

Mount Pleasant and Wando can make a claim of being the biggest lacrosse hotbed in the state, and for good reason. Wando held tryouts for the boys and girls teams, and the turnout was impressive.

Boys coach Lance Renes said 112 boys and 50 girls tried out for the teams.

The breakdown for the boys includes 48 for the varsity team and 64 for the junior varsity squad.

"We were expecting 100, but this is definitely the highest we've ever had," Renes said. "The number of kids playing at the rec level has been increasing every year. It's really catching on. It's the type of game that is consuming, and once you play, it's addictive."

The High School League sanctioned lacrosse four years ago, and the Warrior boys own a 52-6 record during that stretch. The Warriors have played in three state championships and won back-to-back titles in 2012 and '13.

Holmes No. 6

Conway pitcher Grant Holmes is the No. 6 senior in the country in the latest Perfect Game rankings.

Holmes was impressive at the Perfect Game National Showcase, throwing 96 mph. He was also on the roster for the nationally televised Perfect Game All-American Classic in August.

He also recorded 97 mph in October at the World Wood Bat world championship. He is committed to the University of Florida, but is expected to be a first-round pick in June's major league draft.

Holmes' brother, Colby, was a pitcher for the South Carolina Gamecocks and played on national championship teams in 2011 and '12.

Holmes was a 21-game winner during his four-year career with the Gamecocks.
