A St. George man is accused of tying up two women he met online and raping them in motel rooms.
Rodney Sherard Edwards, 23, of Infinger Road is charged with two counts each of kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime.
The first woman was assaulted about 5:30 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Extended Stay on North Arco Lane, according to North Charleston police.
An 18-year-old woman told police she met a man because she was working as an escort through the online classified site backpage.com but things got out of hand when he showed up at the motel room. She said the man pulled out a gun, tied her up with duct tape, raped her and stole two cell phones and $40. She pulled off the duct tape with her mouth to call for help.
Police found evidence on a condom wrapper that linked Edwards to the crime, according to the arrest affidavit. The woman then identified Edwards from a photographic lineup as the man who raped her.
Police said Edwards raped another woman he met through backpage.com less than two weeks later. A 29-year-old woman told police a man knocked on her motel room door at 7480 Northwoods Boulevard about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 24 and forced his way in when she opened it. She said the man tied her up with duct tape, raped her at gunpoint and stole three cell phones, $300 in cash and her son's iPad. She identified Edwards as the man who raped her from a police photo lineup, according to the arrest affidavit.
Edwards was being held in the Charleston County jail Monday.
