Authorities are looking into who dumped medical waste into a ditch in the Lynwood subdivision of James Island, the town's mayor said Monday.
The find was first reported Friday, Mayor Bill Woolsey said. But hazardous-materials crews from the Charleston Fire Department were at the scene on Mellowood Place on Monday morning.
Maj. Eric Watson of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said deputies were not summoned to the scene until Monday morning, when they were asked to help state investigators determine who discarded the items
The pile of waste consisted of catheters and bags of urine, Woolsey said.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control was coordinating the cleanup efforts, Woolsey said.
"It might have been someone who lives there who has health problems," Woolsey said. "We don't know what happened yet."
