The kitchen and the sea enliven one Realtor; the links and slopes thrill another.
They are agents Nick Shahid and Jeffrey Alan Grant, who became affiliated with Carolina One Real Estate's Coleman Boulevard office in Mount Pleasant.
Grant recently moved to Charleston from New York City, where he worked for a number of advertising agencies and was involved in a host of political campaigns and committees in Washington, D.C.
The agent's outside interests include golf, boating, politics, dogs and snow skiing, according to Carolina One.
A Charleston native, Shahid graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in English Composition and Rhetoric. According to Carolina One, he is an avid yachtsman and accomplished cook specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine.
"Nick and Jeffrey are two very exciting additions to our sales team," says Dave Sansom, broker-in-charge of the Coleman office.

Prudential agent to host 'buying versus renting' seminar
In choosing whether to own a home or lease it, tenants can argue that they don't have to worry about making repairs; that's the landlord's job. But homeowners can demonstrate how they're reached the American Dream, a place to settle down and raise a family.
The two approaches will be explored at a seminar next week. Brooke Madsen, a local Realtor with Prudential Southern Coast Real Estate, will host the event on "Renting vs. Buying in 2014."
She says the seminar, to be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Montreaux Bar and Grill in Summerville, "will provide market analysis and the differences in renting versus buying your home."
Madsen has invited local experts to speak on topics relevant to renting, buying and selling your home, according to Prudential Southern Coast.
The specialists include State Farm agent Tony Pope, who will explain the differences of renters' insurance and homeowners' insurance while providing an update on the price controversies surrounding flood insurance.
H&R Block accountant Kirk Taylor will speak on the tax benefits of homeownership and how to take advantage of them, Madsen says. And Tony Page, loan officer with Wells Fargo, will talk about qualifying for a loan, the underwriting process and how to help repair your credit.
Madsen says she will hold drawings for prizes including a grand prize. The seminar is free to the public, but "interested participants should register to save a seat, as seating will be limited," she says.
Registration takes place 6-6:30 p.m. at the Summerville locale, and the seminar will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. A question and answer period will follow.

Sports announcer Nugent joins Carolina One
A new sales associate at Carolina One Real Estate spent more than three decades as broadcaster, most recently heading up the sports department at a local television station.
John Nugent, an Emmy award- winning sports announcer, has joined the real estate agency's Longpoint Road sales office.
For the last five years, Nugent was sports director for WCIV-TV, the local ABC affiliate in Mount Pleasant. His broadcasting career spanned 33 years, according to Carolina One. The graduate of State University of New York at Plattsburgh moved to Charleston in 2008.
Nugent and wife Elaine, also a Carolina One sales associate, have four children and live in Mount Pleasant. In addition to sports, his interests include biking and kayaking, according to Carolina One.
"John Nugent's infectious personality and communication skills are ideally suited to real estate," Longpoint Road office manager Terry Horres says.
Turning 50 years old this year, Carolina One Real Estate describes itself as the leading real estate services firm in the metro Charleston market. As of the end of 2013, the company had handled close to 30 percent of local home sales transactions.

New pool planned, first homes available at Carnes Crossroads
Residential milestones continue mounting at the corner of U.S. highways 176 and 17A.
The latest: Single-family homes are rising at Carnes Crossroads and amenities are taking shape, backers say. The first homes will be located in the St. Thomas Park neiughborhood.
Builders offer nine floor plans, and home pricing begins in the mid $200,000s.
According to the master-planned community's latest newsletter, its residents "will enjoy access to a wide range of recreational and social activities suitable for all ages." The upcoming amenities projects include refurbishing the "iconic and historic" Green Barn, an original structure on the property that Carnes Crossroads preserved. The barn, situated across from the community's Village Green, will anchor a 25-meter competitive pool with beach entry and a kiddie swimming area.
According to Carnes Crossroads developers, "The barn has been transformed into an open-air space that will serve as a gathering place for residents and a venue for community events."
There will be hundreds of acres of parks, lakes and greenway; and walkers, runners and bicylists can enjoy miles of trails threading the neighborhood, promoters say. The attractions "will provide countless opportunities to connect with family and friends."
Carolina One names Arnold to sales team
Wayne Gunther Arnold spent much of his career in the gardening trade. Now he will be involved in another profession familiar with flowering yards.
A Charleston native, Arnold has joined the sales team at Carolina One Real Estate's Main Street office in Summerville.
"It's indeed a pleasure to welcome Wayne Arnold to our Main Street office," broker-in-charge Chip Reeves says. "Wayne brings with him a wealth of experience in both sales and management," he says. The horticulture buff also enjoys exercise and physical fitness programs, Carolina One notes.
Before entering real estate, Arnold worked for Carolina Nurseries from 1991 to 2003 as a field supervisor, graphic designer and sales representative, according to Carolina One. From 1998 to 2013, Arnold was also employed as a retail manager and photo-shoot coordinator for Charleston Gardens, a retail, catalog and now web-based home and garden store.
Arnold attended Camden Military Academy as a youth and later studied at Charleston Southern University.

The Reserve at Lake Keowee boasts record construction, strong sales year
An Upstate resort community that counts Charleston area residents among its property holders built more homes in 2013 than at any time in its history.
Last year, families from 40 states traveled to The Reserve at Lake Keowee to learn more about real estate opportunities, promoters say. As a result, sales increased 50 percent, the company says. More development and construction are planned for 2014.
Moreover, The Reserve posted a record year in new home construction. Fifty-one plans were submitted to the community's Architecture Review Committee, and 40 homes broke ground. At the same time, 24 new construction homes were finished in 2013. The total number of completed homes in The Reserve reached 232.
During the year, The Reserve "welcomed" 69 new club members from 20 states and the Caribbean as a result of the sales and construction activity.
The Reserve released three high-end properties last year, which "contributed to the strength in 2013 sales." The neighborhoods include Village Point Phase II, which added 17 homesites to 11 now-finished sites in the first phase. Also released to buyers are High Grove and The Cottages at Laurel Pond.
Village Point, which includes a marina, opened a model home last year.
Separately, The Reserve last July broke ground on its new High Grove neighborhood. The community will include lake access and parkside homes. Residential construction should begin in the fall.
The Cottages at Laurel Pond, "a collection of rustic post and beam cottages overlooking the community's Laurel Pond," also should be finished by the fall.
"We could not be more excited to welcome more families to The Reserve this past year," says Rutledge Livingston, the community's Director of Sales. "The Reserve continues to offer a high-quality lake living experience that is very appealing to buyers across the U.S. and internationally," he says.
Launched in 2000 by Greenwood Communities and Resorts, The Reserve at Lake Keowee residential community spans 3,900 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It includes 30 miles of shoreline on Lake Keowee and marks convenient access to commercial and cultural centers such as Greenville; Asheville, N.C.; Clemson Univeristy and Furman University.
The resort neighborhood sports a 200-slip marina, village center and Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. More than 1,400 acres of parks, preserves, trails and green spaces are part of the more than $100 million spent on family amenities at The Reserve. The resort says it counts 700 members from 30 states.

Carolina One adds pair of Realtors
Two new sales associates of a sizable Charleston area real estate firm recently teamed up to form their own agent group.
Frank Cox and Diane Gorczyca started The Cox & Gorczyca Group at Carolina One Real Estate's U.S. Highway 17 North office in Mount Pleasant.
Born in New Jersey, Cox brings an established background in law enforcement, retiring after a 25 year career. Cox is a certified EMT and a graduate of the Bergen County Police Academy. He attended classes at Rutgers University and at Paterson and John Jay colleges.
Cox, whose hobby is weightlifting, moved to the Charleston area three years ago. He lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife Diane and their two children, Kasey and Devin.
Gorczyca similarly moved to Charleston three years ago from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, but she's owned a home in Charleston since 2002.
The 22 year veteran of the travel agency business has real estate experience in both New Jersey and Ohio. In 2010, she was the office Top Producer for Cleveland-based Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, according to Carolina One.
Gorczyca is married and has a daughter, Laura. She's a fine wine connoisseur and a French language student. Her hobbies include golf and world travel. She's also a Lowcountry Food Kitchen volunteer.
