King Street is losing one of its high-profile retail merchants this month. After nearly 10 years in the thick of the tourist district, Lacoste is closing its doors at 248 King St. on Jan. 25. Its lease is expiring, and the company isn’t renewing it.
The store at the north end of The Shops at Charleston Place was the French retailer’s 25th U.S. location. The sportswear brand known by its famous alligator logo opened the 1,000-square-foot downtown Charleston store in July 2004 as a prototype for its smaller boutique-style shops. At the time, Lacoste’s U.S. division was being run by local resident and retailing veteran Bob Siegel.
“We would like to thank our loyal customers who have helped support our boutique on King Street for 10 years and insist on making Lacoste the worldwide iconic brand that it is,” store manager Suzanne Safriet said. “We are going to truly miss all the friendships we’ve made over the years here.”
The Charleston Place store is Lacoste’s only S.C. location. The next closest brick-and-mortar shop is in Charlotte.
