Charleston police have released surveillance photos of two college-age men who came up to an SUV parked on King Street Sunday night and took a cellphone from the driver.

Here’s what happened, according to the incident report.

Officers were called to King and Cannon streets about 10:40 p.m. Sunday. A 29-year-old man told police he and his girlfriend were sitting in his green Chevy Trailblazer when “two college kids” walked by and started directing vulgar comments at his girlfriend. The men started beating on the passenger window while the driver called police.

The driver got out of the SUV to confront the pair. One of them, wearing a blue T-shirt and tight blue jeans, took his “brand new” $175 black Optimus LG cellphone and ran west on Cannon Street, according to the report.

The girlfriend also got out and the other young man, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and khaki shorts, pushed her down, and kicked her cellphone across the sidewalk and also ran west on Cannon Street.

The girlfriend retrieved her phone. The stolen phone did not have a tracking system, and several calls were not answered, according to the report.

No damage to the SUV was observed, and the driver and his girlfriend were not hurt.

Anyone who recognizes either of the two young men in the photos is asked to contact Investigator Kursh at 720-3913 or kurshj@charleston-sc.gov.
