Estero, Fla. - Former South Carolina Stingrays forward Parker Stanfield scored in the first period to help lift the Florida Everblades over the Stingrays, 1-0, Saturday night at Germain Arena.
The Everblades buried the only goal of the contest at 10:54 of the first period when Stanfield fired a shot under the blocker of goaltender Jeff Jakaitis, who made 16 saves in the game, from the right-wing circle. Everblades forward Mike Merrifield and another former Stingrays forward, Trevor Bruess, picked up the assists.
In the second period, the Stingrays (25-8-1-2) outshot the Everblades (21-11-1-1), 10-5, and led 19-12 through 40 minutes, generating numerous scoring chances in front of Everblades goalie Trevor Cann, but could not slip an opportunity over the goal line. The Stingrays continued to pressure in the third period, adding 10 more shots on goal, but Cann held on for his first shutout of the season, making 29 saves. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Stingrays return to the North Charleston Coliseum to host the Greenville Road Warriors on Tuesday.
