Spurred by an influx of abandoned hunting dogs, the Charleston Animal Society is offering free adoptions for adult dogs.
"It is against the law to abandon an animal in South Carolina," Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Animal Services Pearl Sutton said in the announcement, "and you can clearly see on many of these hound dogs where the collars were removed."
More than two dozen hound dogs were at the shelter this week, most with their collars removed. The influx of hound dogs is just one reason the adult dog population at the shelter has reached a critical stage, according to the staff.
The shelter is at 2455 Remount Road. More information is at CharlestonAnimalSociety.org.
