Investigators are working to identify the body of a man found Thursday afternoon in a vacant house near Mount Pleasant.

The body was discovered about 1 p.m. lying face down on a mattress in a bedroom at 971 Bee Hive Road, Charleston County sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson said. The area is off U.S. Highway 17 north of Mount Pleasant.

The body was initially identified only as a middle-age black male. There was no immediate indication of foul play, Watson said.

Night-time temperatures dropped well below freezing in the Charleston area earlier this week.
