Connor Shaw coming to N. Charleston fan store; Kmart bids Mount Pleasant farewell

Former USC quarterback Connor Shaw, who was named MVP of the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1, is coming to a North Charleston retail store this week.

USC bowl game MVP Connor Shaw is making time for local fans at a North Charleston retail store this weekend, less than two weeks after finishing his final season as starting quarterback for the No. 4 ranked Gamecocks.

Shaw will meet fans and sign autographs from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fan Zone at 5070 International Blvd., near the Tanger Outlet mall in North Charleston.

Autographs are $15 for fans who bring their own items to be signed. Autographs on footballs, helmets and prints are free if the items are purchased at the Fan Zone Friday. Cameras are welcome, but those who want to take a photo with Shaw will have to get his entourage's approval, according to Fan Zone's Facebook page.

Shaw was named the most valuable player of the Capital One Bowl, leading USC over Wisconsin 34-24 on Jan. 1. It was the final game of his college career, but USC coach Steve Spurrier has said he expects to see Shaw playing in the NFL.

Checking out

Time is running out for blue-light specials in Mount Pleasant.

Sunday is the last day for the longstanding Kmart discount store at 1551 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. Until the 6 p.m. closing, liquidation sales will be held throughout the week to sell off its remaining inventory, which has been marked down to as much as 80 percent.

Questions remain about the future of the site. Daniel Island-based Grove Property Fund LLC bought the 17-acre site in 2011 for $5.5 million with other partners, and it hasn't yet submitted any plans to Mount Pleasant.

The owners have met with the town's planning department to discuss the permitted uses, according to Mayor Linda Page. Kmart opened the East Cooper store in November 1978.

Slimmer look

Ann Taylor at 265 King St. is in its final days. The national women's retailer is closing its downtown Charleston location Jan. 25 after a nearly 20-year run in that space, but the chain's Mount Pleasant Towne Centre shop will remain open. A company official was not available Wednesday to comment.
