Source: Lenoir-Rhyne's Mike Houston agrees to coach Citadel football

Houston

Lenoir-Rhyne coach Mike Houston has agreed to become the new football coach at The Citadel, a source at Lenoir-Rhyne told The Post and Courier on Tuesday.

Houston, who led the Bears to the Division II national championship game this season, agreed to an offer over the weekend, the Lenoir-Rhyne source said.

Houston was in Charleston on Monday to meet with The Citadel's search committee and administration, and informed his Lenoir-Rhyne staff of the move Tuesday, the source said.

Reached by the Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record on Tuesday, Houston confirmed that he has resigned from Lenoir-Rhyne.

Houston, 42, just finished his third season as head coach at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne, leading the Bears to a 13-2 record and an appearance in the national championship game. Lenoir-Rhyne is in Hickory, N.C.

The 1994 Mars Hill graduate has been named South Atlantic Conference coach of the year twice, and owns a record of 29-8 in three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne. He was defensive coordinator at Lenoir-Rhyne for four years and also coached on the college level at Brevard.

The Citadel is seeking to replace Kevin Higgins, who resigned after nine seasons on Dec. 16 to become an assistant coach at Wake Forest.
