North Charleston man accused of bigamy

Eugene Richardson

A 56-year-old man was arrested on a charge of bigamy after a woman told authorities she had married a man in June who later admitted having married her only to get another woman to divorce him. The plan apparently failed, and the man ended up getting back together with the earlier wife, according to an incident report.

Eugene Richardson, 56, of Ashley Shores Drive in North Charleston, is charged with bigamy. He was being held in the Charleston County jail on $10,000 bail set Saturday by Magistrate Priscilla Baldwin.

According to an incident report filed in August with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, a 59-year-old North Charleston woman told deputies she had married Richardson on June 4 after getting a marriage license at the county Probate Court.

She said Richardson later told her he was still married to another woman, whom he had wed in 1996, and that he was trying to use the new marriage to force a divorce.

The woman told deputies Richardson then reconciled with the earlier wife and moved to Florida, the incident report says.
