Gone in 60 Days ... or Hours: New cars average two months on dealer lots before they sell, but hot ones motor off in a week or so

That "brand new" vehicle you're looking to buy may be on the lot come Groundhog Day or even St. Patrick's Day.

Then again, if it's in big demand, the car or truck might not be there much past next weekend.

Moreover, it's not always easy judging what vehicles are the most wanted at any given time.

Edmunds.com online auto informational source recently listed the 10 fastest-selling vehicles in November based on how long it for customers to buy them.

Topping the rankings was the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover, which typically stayed at dealerships nine days. But the list wasn't all made up of six figure editions.

"What we found was a good mix of luxury (Range Rover, Corvette) and non-luxury (Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester) vehicles that are very much high in demand," the company said.

In other words, a sturdy SUV could just as likely be "hot" in the short term as a trendy sports car.

By comparison, the average new car that sold in November stayed at the dealership for 59 days before being purchased, the auto information provider said.

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Edmunds.com, which determined the rankings late last month, also offered "a couple of helpful tips to zero in on a fast-selling car."

The company, which claims that nearly 18 million web visitors a month use its research to help them buy an auto, said it compiled the list of high-demand vehicles "to help purchasers of those vehicles better manage their expectations before they start negotiations."

Edmunds.com based its findings on "days to turn" figures, which the company said measures how long a vehicle sits on a dealer's lot before it's sold.

Following Range Rover on the fastest-selling list came the new Chevrolet Corvette, Jeep Cherokee and Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which all took 10 days to leave the lot with a new owner.

The Range Rover proved the priciest model on the list at $108,367, while the best bargain belonged to the Mitsubishi Mirage at $15,430.

According to Edmunds.com, shoppers eying a "hot" car face a dilemma: they likely would end up paying more for the vehicle than if it wasn't in demand.

"Dealers offer few - if any - incentives on the newest, most buzz-worthy cars, and shoppers will likely have very little room to negotiate," said Carroll Lachnit, consumer advice editor for Edmunds.com.

"Luckily there are plenty of great new car deals for anyone who wants to consider other options," the editor said.
