A Hanahan manufacturer is providing more solar energy systems for the troops.
UEC Electronics said today that the Marine Corps placed the $12 million order this week, following a $10 million contract earlier this year.
The company's Ground Renewable Expeditionary Energy Network System, or GREENS, converts sun rays into usable power and stores excess electricity on a battery.
UEC designed the portable devices and has been manufacturing them since 2010.
The Marine Corps has purchased hundreds of the systems and has deployed them all over the world, UEC said. The company added that the Army is evaluating whether to buy them in 2014.
