High-end brokerage contributes to fight against pancreatic cancer
Daniel Ravenel Sotheby's International Realty and associate Beth McCrabb teamed up to donate money to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
McCrabb headed a fundraiser of employees and agents in the office.
Daniel Ravenel, owner and broker-in-charge of the Charleston-based luxury real estate firm, agreed to match the accumulated amount. McCrabb also personally contributed, bringing the total to $2,315.
The cancer network, which goes by PanCan, dates to 1999. The non-profit, patient-based advocacy group provides a range of services such as neighborhood outreach and funding research to give hope to the pancreatic cancer community.
An experienced agent, McCrabb has participated in a number of 5-kilometer races, called "Purple Strides," in places such as Savannah and Cincinnati in support of PanCan. She most recently walked in November in Savannah to help advance research and support patients and families affected by pancreatic cancer.
McCrabb walks in memory of her father, Arnold Hampton, and her uncle, Earl Hampton, who both fought pancreatic cancer.
"We walked for the memories, love, and hope (PanCan) provided our family," McCrabb says.
The contribution pushed McCrabb's team to third highest this year for the Savannah Purple Stride. She was also the top individual fundraiser.
According to PanCan, more than 45,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. The five-year survival rate is 6 percent.
In the past 10 years, the network has awarded 94 research grants totaling nearly $18 million to patient services, treatments and a cure for pancreatic cancer. For more information about the network, visit www.PanCan.org.

Baldwin joins local agency east of the Cooper
A former staffer in housing-related businesses from the nation's capital signed on this fall with Carolina One Real Estate.
Robert Keith Baldwin works with the Carolina One team on U.S. Highway 17 North in Mount Pleasant.
Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in northern Virginia, Baldwin attended North Virginia Community College before trying his hand in the flooring and construction industries. He became a Realtor in 2011. This September, he relocated to Charleston. He currently holds real estate licenses in both South Carolina and Virginia.
Baldwin and his wife Tammy have four grown children and reside in Mount Pleasant. In his spare time, Baldwin likes to boat and fish.

Sweetwater development to start up next year on Beresford Creek
A former Berkeley County estate off Interstate 526 will be home to more than 300 creekside homes and apartments, amenities, an inn and a restaurant, the developer says.
Kassinger Development Group bought 46-acre Rebellion Farms, owned by the Detyens shipyard family. The property will be turned into the residential Sweetwater neighborhood: Developers plan to break ground in spring 2014.
According to the development group, Sweetwater overlooks the pristine waterfront of Beresford Creek. The creek - which leads into the Wando River - offers unobstructed sunrise, Lowcountry marsh and sunset views. The community will be "a unique gathering space with the comfort and amenities an individual or family is looking for in a neighborhood," the developers say.
Sweetwater will materialize off of I-526 at the Clements Ferry Road north exit. Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island and North Charleston are close by and downtown Charleston can be reached conveniently.
"Sweetwater has been in the planning stages for several years and this concept is both new and matchless in the Charleston market," says Wade Thompson, partner with Kassinger Development Group.
"A true multi-use community with priceless views and access to world class amenities makes Sweetwater a place you'll want to call home."
Shoppers can choose from at least 324 properties: luxury, coastal style apartment homes or Charleston style, single-family elevated residences from regional builder Eastwood Homes.
"The Sweetwater community affords us a unique setting that is very fitting with the type and quality of homes we have planned." says Jason Esposito, division president of Eastwood Homes. "Sweetwater will be resort style living at its best," he says.
Due to the high demand in metro Charleston for upscale apartment living, rental reservations will be accepted starting next year, and pre-leasing will begin in late 2014, backers say. The first apartment homes will be ready to move into by early 2015.
The new enclave will provide direct access to deep water for boating and fishing as well as community docks for paddle boarding, kayaking and "simply enjoying the view," Kassinger Development Group says.
Amenities will include saltwater pools and an indoor exercise facility with space for yoga and fitness classes.
"Taking a stroll around the property under the tall live oak and pine trees may take you to the pet park, putting green or mini golf, tennis courts or the neighborhood shop-café," developers say.
A secluded oak-tree-lined driveway leads to an inn and restaurant. "Enjoying a great meal without leaving your neighborhood is a convenient and enjoyable benefit," the development group notes. The inn's accommodations will be "quaint and perfect for the tourist, extended-family guest stays or a planned event, such as a wedding group or business retreat," according to backers.
Sweetwater will be landscaped to take in the existing natural surroundings as well as an outside kitchen and green spaces.
The new village will "maintain the exceptionally high standards" of Kassinger Development Group's previous communities in the Southeast, it says. Based on Sullivan's Island, the group focuses on owning and developing upscale, eco-friendly and energy-efficient multifamily communities within the Southeast.
Completed neighborhoods are comprised of Weirbridge Village and Audubon Place in the Asheville, N.C., area. Pre-leasing has started at The Retreat at West Creek in Richmond, Va., which will be completed by June 2014. The Retreat at Hunt Hill in Asheville should open by March.
Smith joins The Post and Courier as advertising executive
An experienced sales representative in the Upstate has been named a real estate advertising executive with The Post and Courier.
Teresa Smith joined the Charleston newspaper's real estate advertising team in the past month as multimedia advertising account executive. She held the same position at The Greenville News in Greenville. Her accounts there included large real estate agencies, national and local builders and land brokers.
Smith won "Local Account Sales Executive of the Year" in 2011 at The Greenville News.
She has two grown children and a 5-year-old granddaughter who live in the Greenville area. "I know they will visit me at the coast often," she says.
Smith says she's "excited to have the opportunity to live and work in the Charleston market and very happy to be with The Post and Courier."
Smith, who lives on a golf course, enjoys the game "but I am a fair weather golfer (I usually won't go out if it's too hot or too cold)." She likes to cook when she has time to experiment.
She says she's a "lifelong newspaper reader" and loves her 4-year old pet Bichon Frise, named Noodle.
Sabal Homes cited for revenue strength in South Carolina
Based on two publications, a Mount Pleasant-based real estate company ranks among the 10 fastest-growing "large" businesses in South Carolina for 2012.
SCBiz magazine and the Charleston Regional Business Journal honored Sabal Homes among its peers at a fall ceremony at the Columbia Marriott.
Sabal Homes placed in the Top 10 in the large business category, which recognizes companies with gross revenues of more than $10 million, the homebuilder says.
This is the second year Sabal Homes received the award. The builder was honored in 2010 for placing in the Top 20.
"We're proud to support the development of both our local economy and South Carolina's," says Matt Jones, co-owner of Sabal Homes. Gipe gains Realtor emeritus level
A career of 40 years and counting as a Realtor has earned one Mount Pleasant agent a lasting national award.
Timm Gipe, of Carolina One Real Estate, attained Realtor Emeritus status last month at the annual meeting of the National Association of Realtors in San Francisco.
According to Carolina One, any person who has held membership in the national Realtors association as a Realtor, Realtor-Associate or combination of both for 40 years stands eligible.
Gipe, who works in the Mount Pleasant Coleman Boulevard office of Carolina One, graduated from The Citadel in 1969 and launched his Realtor career in 1973.
Earlier this year, Carolina One honored Gipe as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. To qualify for the award, an associate must have reached at least 500 sales closings or generated $100 million in closed sales' volume within the greater Charleston Multiple Listing Service area.
Gipe served on Mount Pleasant Town Council from 1981 to 1983. He presided over the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors in 1983. He's a past president of the Charleston Citadel Club and Metropolitan Exchange Club of Charleston and life member of the Hibernian Society.
Foreclosure rate on decline in South Carolina, nation in October
Still an economic drag but not nearly as severe, the foreclosure inventory in the state in October fell to 2.2 percent of mortgages, off 0.9 percent from a year ago.
The rate nearly mimicked the U.S. as a whole. The national inventory sank to 2.2 percent, down 0.8 percent. The inventory accounts for all problem loans in foreclosure.
Separately, the rate of mortgages in South Carolina in which homeowners are seriously delinquent on payments stood at 4.8 percent, lower than the 5.1 percent national figure for October.
The figures stem from CoreLogic's most recent National Foreclosure Report, which came out earlier this month.
CoreLogic - which calls itself the country's leading residential property information, analytics and services provider - disclosed that 879,000 homes in the U.S. were in some stage of foreclosure as of October, plummeting 31 percent from 1.3 million residences a year previous.
At the same time, there were 48,000 completed foreclosures nationwide in October, a 30 percent slide from 68,000 in October 2012. Completed foreclosures represent the total number of homes actually lost to foreclosure.
Since the financial crisis began in September 2008, completed foreclosures have averaged about 900,000 a year, CoreLogic notes. Prior to the housing market decline in 2007, completed foreclosures from 2000 to 2006 averaged 252,000 a year nationwide.
"Year over year, the foreclosure inventory, as a percentage of all homes with a mortgage, has declined almost a full percentage point to 2.2 percent," says Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic.
"This is good news for the housing and mortgage finance markets, but the rate remains elevated relative to the pre-crisis level of about 0.6 percent. There are almost 900,000 properties still in foreclosure, but a normal level would be only a quarter of the current stock," Fleming says.
"The scourge of an elevated foreclosure inventory is easing. In October, every state posted a year-over-year decline in completed foreclosures, which is positive news," says Anand Nallathambi, president and chief executive of CoreLogic.
"Additionally, the rate of serious delinquencies, which fell more than 25 percent year over year, is at the lowest level in nearly five years, which is great news as we head into a new year."
As of October, Florida lead the country with 115,000 completed foreclosures in the past year and 7.1 percent of all mortgages in the foreclosure inventory.
Prudential Southern Coast agent adds short sales, foreclosure certification
Considering the extensive details of short sales and the still elevated volume of foreclosures, gaining expertise in these fields can be key attributes for Realtors.

According to Prudential Southern Coast, knowing how to help sellers maneuver the complexities of short sales and help buyers pursue short sale and foreclosure opportunities aren't merely good skills to have in today's market - they're critical.
"For many real estate professionals, short sales and foreclosures are the new 'traditional' real estate transaction," says Linda Collins, broker-in-charge of Prudential Southern Coast Real Estate.
Collins, who cited White's dedication to her clients, also congratulated her on the "coveted" SFR certification.
