Two words can describe the Charleston County Aviation Authority this year - turbulent and expanding.
From a high-profile resignation to the appointment of a state senator to run the agency, from state and federal probes involving construction contracts to a land sale involving Boeing, and from a search for female members to be seated on the previously all-male board of political appointees to low-cost carrier JetBlue landing in Charleston, the 13-member group worked at full throttle.
The $189 million overhaul and expansion of Charleston International Airport's aging terminal proved to be a sideshow for the unfolding drama of the oversight agency.
Calmer conditions settled over the airport as the year wound down, but an ongoing FBI and state probe into the possibility that some board members steered contract work to certain companies still looms.
