CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- Carolina Beach is considering authorizing the first hookah bar in the town.
The StarNews of Wilmington reported the town council is expected to consider the idea at a meeting Jan. 14.
A hookah is a water pipe used to smoke flavored tobacco. A hookah usually has several used by a group of smokers at the same time.
North Carolina law does not allow smoking in bars and restaurants if they also serve food or drinks.
The town's planning commission was asked earlier this month to change local ordinances to allow a hookah cafe in the business district.
There are several hookah lounges in New Hanover County.
