Demolition work is underway on a high-profile building that once housed a prominent Mount Pleasant car business.
Work crews today began razing the former Miller Cadillac dealership near Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and Mathis Ferry Road, possibly to make room for a new hotel, the town's mayor said.
The building off of U.S. Highway 17 has been vacant for nearly a year.
The Cadillac dealership opened on the site in 1978. The business was moved to Savannah Highway in West Ashley earlier this year, after being purchased by Baker Motor Co. in late 2012.
The owners of the property have been trying to lease the 4.6-acre parcel. It's being marketed for redevelopment by Greenville-based Avtex Commercial Properties Inc., which did not respond immediately today to emails and a phone message.
Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page said no formal development plan has come across her desk, but she's been told that a hotel operator was interested in the site.
"I would assume that's what it's going to be," Page said today. "It's good location for a hotel."
A string of redevelopment projects along that same stretch of Highway 17 have been keeping demolition businesses busy over the past few months.
In September, a building at 250 Johnnie Dodds that formerly housed Grace Chapel, and before that, at least two restaurants, was razed to make way for a proposed 100-room hotel.
Around the same time, the aging Masters Inn across the highway at McGrath Darby Boulevard and Wingo Way was pulled down. It's being replaced with a six-story, 133-room Hilton Garden Inn that's scheduled to open next year.
Also reduced to rubble was a low-slung brick office building at 389 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., next to the Staples store in Patriots Plaza and within eyeshot of the Miller Cadillac site. A Walgreens pharmacy is being built on that property.
