Foul play not suspected in inmate death in Charleston County jail

An inmate in the Charleston County jail died after suffering a seizure Monday night, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office, the State Law Enforcement Division and the Coroner's Office are investigating.

The Coroner's Office identified the inmate as Joseph Grant III, 53, of North Charleston. Tests are being run to determine the cause of death, but there was no sign of trauma, and foul play is not suspected, Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin said.

Grant was found unresponsive on the floor of the jail's medical unit at 11:40 p.m. After performing CPR, emergency medical personnel transported him to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Grant suffered a seizure earlier that day while he was being booked into the jail, according to the sheriff's office. He was evaluated by medical staff and transferred to the medical unit for further observation, when he became unresponsive, officials said.

Grant had been arrested by the North Charleston Police Department on an outstanding bench warrant.
