Monette is a 78-year-old widow who cares for her disabled 42-year-old son. They subsist on a limited income and have recently suffered a number of setbacks.
Back in September, Monette's 10-year-old washing machine broke down. Since then, she has had to hand wash their clothes or travel to the Laundromat, making her life considerably more difficult due to her advanced age and poor state of health.
To make things worse, Monette's car broke down this month. She hopes a friend of the family might be able to repair it as she cannot afford to take the car to an auto mechanic. In the meantime, she has been dependent on friends and family to get her around to do her errands, including going to the Laundromat.
In addition, Monette has just learned that the house she rents has gone into foreclosure. She is concerned about who her new landlord will be and whether her rent will increase.
In a happy turn of events, however, contributions to the Good Cheer Fund have allowed one of our partner agencies to purchase a new washing machine, which will be delivered and installed for Monette before Christmas to ease one of her heavy burdens.
Your generous donation can help the fund provide a happier holiday for others like Monette who face critical needs at this time of year.
Contributions to The Post and Courier's Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry since 1927. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds collected are the Lowcountry Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, the Association for the Blind, Coastal Catholic Charities and Carolina Youth Development Center. Every cent of the money goes directly to the agencies, as there are no administrative costs involved.
Send tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at www.goodcheerfund.com.
