Summerville's Reona Hirai is the 2013 Beth Daniel Player of the Year, an honor that recognizes the top female golfer in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association. Hirai will be officially recognized in February at the Sea Pines Junior Heritage.
Hirai will be following in Daniel's footsteps, having signed to play for Furman next year.
Hirai started the season with a slim 44-point lead over Kelli Murphy of Elgin, and the two exchanged the top spot several times. Murphy was ahead heading into the final points event, but Hirai vaulted ahead and won the title by 15 points.
During the past year, Hirai won seven points events, including the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea. She also had six other top-10 finishes. Most recently, Hirai successfully defended her girls title in the George Holliday Memorial Junior tournament played at Myrtle Beach National. Hirai shot 3-under 213 and beat runner-up Murphy by six strokes.
Coosaw Creek Interclub champ
Coosaw Creek is the 2013 Charleston Area Men's Interclub Golf Association champion, finishing the season-long competition with 121 points. Pine Forest was second with 117, followed by: Wescott, 111.5; Miler, 103.5; Charleston National, 98; Dunes West, 91.5; Shadowmoss, 89; Crowfield, 88; Berkeley, 86.5; RiverTowne, 83; Legend Oaks, 79; Charleston Municipal, 77.5; and Stono Ferry, 62.5.
Pine Forest won the final match of the season, played at RiverTowne, with a score of 29 points, followed by Crowfield with 22 and RiverTowne with 18.
Jim Delaney of RiverTowne and Robert Lindley were the top individuals, scoring 16 points. Carl Anderson of Legend Oaks was third with 15 points.
The organization also presented a check for $2,000 to its designated charity for the year, Lowcountry Orphan Relief.
Brown-Hoover team captures Adams title
Lea Anne Brown and Mark Hoover combined for a score of 151 to win the Johnny Adams Mixed Team Championship played this year at Wescott Golf Club, Diane and Tom Eberhard were second with a score of 155 and Taylor Mayers and Dane Henderson third at 156.
Jeannie Hillock and Chris Pinckney won a scorecard playoff over Kristen Biety and Mark Pine and Wanda Torres and Frank Johnson for the second flight after the teams finished with a score of 165.
Bright, Kirkham win
Mike Bright of Mount Pleasant and Jim Kirkham shot 12-under-par 131 and won the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball One-Day Tournament of Champions played at Pine Needles and Mid Pines in Southern Pines, N.C.
Boyter wins merchandiser award
Benjamin Boyter of Kiawah Island Golf Resort was named the Carolinas PGA merchandiser of the year for 2103 in the resort division.
