Throughout the year, caseworkers at the Good Cheer Fund's partner agencies have the opportunity to meet many wonderful yet struggling families. Mrs. Smith's is one of them.

Mrs. Smith has custody of her six grandchildren who range in age from 2 to 14. She has been working with one agency's family strengthening program, which provides resources and support to families in jeopardy of having their children removed and placed in shelter or group care.

Her caseworker says the children are a joy to work with. They always look forward to his visits to the home and don't like to see him leave. During the time he has been working with family, he says Mrs. Smith has strived to provide her grandchildren with whatever they need, including taking the initiative to track down community resources for herself and her family. The caseworker helped provide some basic needs such as clothing for the school year.

Despite this help, Mrs. Smith will struggle to provide clothing and much-needed new bedding, as well as pay the family's heating bills. Your donation to the Good Cheer Fund can help ease her struggle and make the holiday season brighter for the children.

Today, for the third year in a row, we are pleased to announce the Yarborough Applegate Law Firm's very generous $10,000 contribution, which will go a long way toward helping families such as the Smiths.

"It is our pleasure to be able to give back to the people in our community who need help the most. The good work done by The Post and Courier in its distribution of funds to local charities has inspired us to participate in your philanthropic efforts," said David B. Yarborough Jr. "We are blessed to again have the opportunity to make this donation to this good cause."

Since 1927, contributions to The Post and Courier's Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holiday season. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds collected are the Association for the Blind, Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, Carolina Youth Development Center, Coastal Catholic Charities and the Lowcountry Food Bank. Every cent of the money goes directly to the agencies, as there are no administrative costs involved.

Send tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at www.goodcheerfund.com.
