Valet parking rates could soon go up at Charleston International Airport.
A Charleston County Aviation Authority panel recommended Tuesday that rates rise $2 to $17 per day starting Jan. 1. The rate could rise again by another $1 within the next 12 months, depending on automobile volume in the valet lot.
The rate is being changed because at $15 it is now the same as the parking deck charge per day, which is leading to overcrowding in the valet lot's 195 spaces.
The valet rate and the parking deck rate have been $15 per day since 2005, when the parking deck was completed. The previous valet rate was $18 per day.
The committee's recommendation will go to the full airport board Dec. 19.
