The Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested a man 16 years after a child reported to them that he had sexually assaulted her, according to investigators.
Travis Kilgo, 50, was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11.
The warrant was issued in 1997, but it fell through the cracks and Kilgo was not arrested, according to Sheriff's Office Maj. Eric Watson.
An annual audit of their records, ordered by Sheriff Al Cannon revealed the warrant, Watson said. Authorities located Kilgo in Florida and arrested him within 24 hours of discovering the warrant.
Cannon is expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning to discuss the case and further discuss the audit. The sheriff's office has now created new databases, Watson said.
"We're correcting a lot of mistakes that may have happened 10 or 15 years ago because the technology wasn't available to us then," Watson said. "It will address the backlog of warrants."
In November 1997, a 13-year-old girl, who The Post and Courier will not identify, reported to the sheriff's office that Kilgo had sexually assaulted her between the ages of 5 and 7, which she said occurred between 1988 and 1991, according to an incident report.
Kilgo remained jailed at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center on Monday night.
