Hanahan police arrested a Stratford High School teacher and coach after authorities found "severe" bruising and burns on the mother of his children.
Steven Jones, 44, of Berkeley Street in Hanahan, is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, Hanahan police said.
The allegations against Jones came to light Tuesday when the mother of his children was arrested by Dorchester County sheriff's deputies and charged with disorderly conduct, police said. The woman's identity was redacted from the Hanahan police report.
According to the report, the woman encountered deputies concerning reports of a possible shoplifting. Authorities determined that the woman was not trying to steal products, but they took her into custody after she yelled and cursed at deputies, the report stated. Once at the county jail, officials discovered "severe" first-degree burns and bruising on the woman's back, police said. The woman attempted to soothe the injuries with about 10 pain patches.
The woman was transported to Summerville Medical Center after jail officials refused to take her in her condition, police said.
When questioned, the woman was hesitant to explain her injuries. She eventually told police that Jones, her boyfriend and father of her children, was responsible.
According to the report, Jones is a teacher at Stratford High School and a sports coach.
The woman told police that she was afraid to report the incident given Jones' position in the community.
Police Lt. Michael Fowler said authorities are still investigating how the woman's injuries were caused.
In a statement, Berkeley County School District spokeswoman Susan Haire said Jones was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation. Haire said the district will not comment on Jones' role at Stratford "as investigations regarding personnel matters are protected by privacy rights."

Editor's Note: A story on Page A7 of Saturday's editions regarding the arrest of Stratford High School teacher Steven Jones needs clarification. A Hanahan police report listed two charges, but court records show that only one charge of criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature was lodged.
