Wando High School in Mount Pleasant is one of 90 high schools from across the country to win $25,000 through State Farm's "Celebrate My Drive" campaign.

More than 3,500 schools nationwide participated in the Oct. 18-26 event that asked students, parents, teachers and community members to pledge to drive safely and answer online questions about good driving practices.

The school's Student Council led this effort with the support of other student and parent groups as well as faculty. Individuals could log on once each day to make a commitment to safe driving.

School Principal Lucy Beckham said the school plans to do a significant upgrade of its gym's public address system, to create better ways of communicating school activities and to fund a student safe driving program with recognitions. Those ideas came from students.

"We are thrilled with this award," Beckham said.

The award was announced Tuesday. Wando High is the only school in the state to be named a winner.
