Two more people died from the flu in Charleston last week, a spokeswoman for Medical University Hospital confirmed Monday.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has not confirmed the flu deaths yet. DHEC issues a weekly flu report every Wednesday.

Medical University Hospital spokeswoman Heather Woolwine could not confirm the identity, age or gender of either patient. Both were hospitalized at the Medical University last week, she said.

Nearly 1,000 positive rapid tests for the flu were reported to the state health department during the week ending Nov. 23. More than 2,100 positive rapid tests have been reported since flu season started in late September. Most of these cases have been tracked in the Lowcountry.

According to DHEC’s most recent report, three people have died from the flu in South Carolina this season. At least one of those was a Dorchester County resident.

This number does not include the deaths confirmed Monday by the Medical University Hospital.

During the 2012-2013 flu season, 46 South Carolina residents died from the disease.
