The Smalls Institute for Music and Youth Leadership, a local organization that provides mobile music classroom instruction to students attending Title 1 schools, has received a $1,700 grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission for the 2014 fiscal year.
The grant “will enable Smalls Institute to help fill the gap in music and arts programs in some of our public schools where funding cuts have hit hardest,” said co-founder Sherry Smalls.
The organization is raising funds to match the grant. An all-day fundraiser is planned Dec. 10 at Paisano’s Pizza Grill on James Island, 1246 Camp Road.
